F3 won't eat food anymore? How to fix quick-eat on PC

Since patch 1.04, F3 only opens the food wheel and eating moved to another key. Turn on one setting or rebind the key to get quick-eat back.

Mechanics · Updated

Steps

  1. Open the keybind menu. Go to the Input options. With the Classic control scheme selected, press F to open the keybind list.
  2. Turn on Same Key for Quick Slot Related Actions. Scroll to the Basic (Quick Slots and Functions) section and switch Same Key for Quick Slot Related Actions to On. The patch left it off. With it on, tapping F3 eats your quick-slot food and holding F3 opens the food wheel, like before.
  3. Or give eating its own key. If you'd rather leave that option off, find the eat-food shortcut in the same list and bind it to a key you like. Players used keys like G or the old sub-evade key.
  4. On a non-US keyboard, rebind even if you like the default. The new default is the key left of 1 on a US keyboard (` or ~). On other layouts the game may assign a key you can only type with Shift, and then eating does nothing. Rebind it to a key you can press on its own.

The problem: after patch 1.04, pressing F3 on PC no longer eats your quick-slot food. It just opens the food wheel, so you can’t heal in a fight. Switching between the Default and Classic control schemes, unbinding and rebinding F3, or reinstalling doesn’t change anything.

Why it happens: the patch split eating from the food wheel. F3 now only opens the wheel, and the eat shortcut moved to a separate key, which is the one left of 1 on a US keyboard. One player guessed the change was meant to stop people from opening the wheel by accident while trying to heal mid-fight.

What fixed it: turning on Same Key for Quick Slot Related Actions under Input, Basic (Quick Slots and Functions). Two players in the second thread called it a total fix, and with it on, F3 behaves the way it did before the patch. The setting covers the F1 to F4 quick slots, so the mount and weapon slots go back to tap-to-use as well.

Good to know

  • The T key can stop working. One player found that with Same Key for Quick Slot Related Actions on, T no longer draws or sheathes the weapon. If that bothers you, leave the option off and give eating its own key instead.
  • Putting eating back on F3 by hand is messy. One player said the game wouldn’t accept F3 for the eat shortcut. Another got it onto F3 but lost hold-F3 for the food wheel and moved the wheel to F4. The setting above is the cleaner way to keep healing on F3.
  • Azerty and other layouts: a player with a French AZERTY keyboard said they had to switch their keyboard layout to US to play. Another player rebound eating to the key in the tilde position, which is ^ on their layout.
  • Some players still couldn’t fix it. A few people in both threads said none of these suggestions worked for them. If you’re one of them, report it to Pearl Abyss, since the threads don’t have another fix.
